An Overview of Motorcycle Accident Injuries

Last updated 5 years ago

Without the protection of airbags and the steel structure of a car, motorcyclists are much more vulnerable to injuries when they are involved in accidents; in fact, a motorcyclist is five times more likely than a driver to be injured in an accident. Here are a few of the more common personal injuries sustained in motorcycle accidents:

  • Abrasions: Also known as road rash, abrasions endured when a rider hits the asphalt can be very painful. Riders can do their part to prevent this type of injury by covering as much of the body as possible by wearing long pants, long sleeves, and gloves; but the fact remains that even these precautions cannot always keep a rider safe.
  • Head Trauma: Skull fractures and brain injuries are common in motorcycle accidents, due to the force of the collision and the impact if a rider’s head hits the ground. Head injuries are always serious, and brain damage can permanently affect a victim’s quality of life. Even wearing a helmet is not always enough to completely prevent these injuries.
  • Spinal Cord Injury: Whether from the force of the collision or an object severing the spinal cord, spine injuries can easily happen during an accident. If the spinal cord is severed, victims may be paralyzed below the point of injury, but even less severe injuries can damage nerves and cause permanent impairment.
  • Arm and Leg Fractures: Broken bones are another common injury in motorcycle accidents. A rider’s arm or leg can be twisted in the impact, or the force of hitting the concrete may be enough to break a bone.
  • Internal Injuries: Internal organs can be damaged and begin to bleed after an accident. If not treated promptly, these injuries can become more severe and lead to complications.
