Compared to the same time period last year, traffic fatalities throughout Illinois have increased. There have been 533 people killed in traffic accidents in 2012. Officials suspect the warm winter and spring are partially to blame. IDOT Secretary Ann Schneider also points to increased instances of distracted driving.
Other statistics for 2012 traffic fatalities reveal:
- 156 people were killed in 142 alcohol-related crashes
- In 143 fatal crashes, a safety belt was NOT used
- 110 fatal crashes involved drivers who did not have a valid driver's license
