Sergio Pedroza, an 11-year-old boy from the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago, was killed late Sunday night in a house fire. Pedroza, who was autistic, was inside the house when the fire broke out. His mother was on the porch and was unable to get back into the house. McCready, Garcia & Leet offer our condolences to the Pedroza family.
Landlords can be liable for injuries to their tenants if they do not maintain their premises appropriately. Landlords are required to install and maintain working smoke detectors in rental buildings. Such measures prevent many tragedies similar to this one. McCready, Garcia & Leet have represented many renters who have been injured or killed in apartments without smoke detectors.
